Water Damage Severity Assessment
Not all water damage requires the same response. Answer a few quick questions to receive a general assessment of the severity of your situation and the services that may be appropriate.
This tool provides general guidance only and does not replace an onsite inspection.
Answer six quick questions to receive a general severity assessment. No personal information required.
1What best describes your situation?
2Is standing water currently present?
3How long has the area been wet?
4Which materials appear to be affected?

Recommended Services
Moisture Detection
Moisture meters and thermal imaging help locate hidden water behind walls and under flooring.
Typical Response Timeline
As soon as practical.
Drying Time Estimate
1–2 days
Reconstruction needs may extend the total project duration beyond the drying estimate.
This assessment provides general educational guidance only and is not a professional inspection, structural evaluation, insurance determination, or restoration quote. The actual severity of water damage can only be determined through an onsite assessment using appropriate moisture detection equipment.
What Makes Water Damage Worse?
Several factors can increase the severity of water damage and the scope of restoration required. Understanding these factors can help you understand why a fast response matters.
Standing Water
Water that continues to pool spreads into surrounding materials and framing, increasing the area that must be dried and restored.
Time
The longer materials stay wet, the more moisture they absorb. Mold can begin growing within 48 hours of water intrusion.
Porous Materials
Drywall, carpet, insulation, and cabinetry absorb and hold moisture, making them harder to dry and more likely to require removal.
Hidden Moisture
Water behind walls and under flooring is not always visible. Hidden moisture can cause ongoing damage if not detected and dried.
Category of Water
Clean water is the least complex to address. Gray water and especially sewage (Category 3) require disinfection and removal of affected porous materials.
Delayed Drying
When drying is delayed, secondary damage such as mold growth, warped materials, and structural issues becomes more likely.
Understanding the Severity Levels
Minor
Localized damage with limited materials affected.
Moderate
Multiple materials or longer moisture exposure.
Major
Significant water intrusion requiring extensive drying and restoration.
Emergency
Extensive flooding, sewage contamination, or widespread structural involvement requiring immediate professional attention.
Common Water Damage Examples
These examples show typical severity levels and the restoration services that are commonly recommended. Your situation may differ based on the specifics of the loss.
Burst Pipe
Typical severity: Major
Likely restoration services: Emergency water extraction, structural drying, moisture detection, and reconstruction consultation if drywall or flooring must be replaced.
Bathroom Overflow
Typical severity: Moderate
Likely restoration services: Water extraction, structural drying, dehumidification, and moisture detection to confirm hidden water is resolved.
Finished Basement Flood
Typical severity: Major
Likely restoration services: Emergency extraction, structural drying, dehumidification, contents cleaning, and a reconstruction consultation for drywall and flooring.
Storm Water Intrusion
Typical severity: Emergency
Likely restoration services: Immediate extraction, structural drying, dehumidification, moisture detection, and reconstruction consultation depending on the extent of intrusion.
Kitchen Appliance Leak
Typical severity: Moderate
Likely restoration services: Water extraction, structural drying, moisture detection behind cabinets, and contents cleaning for affected items.
Sewer Backup
Typical severity: Emergency
Likely restoration services: Immediate extraction, disinfection, removal of affected porous materials, structural drying, and mold remediation evaluation.
